CSR unveils 'mass-market' Wi-Fi Internet radio design

Design promises smaller, lower-cost, lower-power Internet radios

Audio DesignLine

CSR has announced a Wi-Fi Internet radio reference design offering a BOM of less than $15 and up to 25 hours of active streaming time running on a 1500-mAh battery. According to the company, the design - called RadioPro - enables Internet radio products at a fraction of the cost of previous products, as well as the possibility of true battery-powered portable Internet radios.

Based on the company's UniFi single-chip Wi-Fi platform and Multimedia Application Processor, RadioPro provides wireless streaming of Internet radio via Wi-Fi without the need for a PC. It supports over 10,000 radio stations through a dedicated Internet radio portal, which it connects to via a Wi-Fi access point.

In addition, it supports "over-the-air" software upgrades, allowing end users to update their products directly with new capabilities as they are made available. RadioPro features all the required hardware design information and software to stream live Internet radio stations, and allows full customization of the user interface and menus through the dedicated SDK.

Pricing and availability: Available free to ODMs.
