LONDON — Internet radio specialist Reciva Ltd (Cambridge, England) is extending the availability of its directory service to third party hardware platforms with its Reciva Connect service.
Until now, Reciva's Internet radio directory was only available as part of the company's Gatepass platform which powers more than 50 different WiFi Internet radio products.
The company says its move is a response to the rapidly booming market for Internet radio devices, with more than 100 new products expected to be launched in the next 18 months based on the Gatepass platform.
Reciva manages a huge Internet radio directory that is updated daily and indexes more than 11,500 Internet radio stations from across the world. The directory includes terrestrial broadcasters streaming programs on the net, as well as pure-play online webcasters and it allows users to easily find content from any location and across a huge range of genres and styles.
Reciva says more than 20 companies are already participating in its beta program testing the Connect offering. Arthur Taylor, Head of Online at Reciva, says: "We recognise that there are a significant number of products being built that might never utilise Reciva modules. Examples are mobile phones, TV set-top boxes and handheld gaming devices. However, these products may be offered by consumer electronics companies that also utilise Reciva modules either currently or at some point in the future."
The global Internet radio device market has been growing by more than 300 percent annually and is expected to exceed 3 million devices in 2009, at which point it will overtake the global DAB radio receiver market in annual sales.
