The Embedded Systems Conference - Silicon Valley has started.

I look at ESC with mixed emotions. I'm really happy that the show has done so well. There's a lot of top notch professionals behind the scenes working hard to make the show a wonderful experience for everybody.

But I also take a few moments to reflect on the shows that have died. There's "That Big Computer Show in Las Vegas" that was a blast to go to, but went the way of the Dodo for a lot of good reasons - and a few bad ones too. And smaller shows like a handful of DSP conferences were shuttered too.

It's ironic that the trueism of product marketing "there's no vast middle market" seems to be inverted for trade shows and conferences. Too big and the costs to exhibit go through the roof with a madhouse of attendees who turn out to be poorly served. Too small and show management doesn't turn a profit.

Hats off to CMP and the Embedded Systems Conference.

Gotta go. The Conference is underway.
